In 2018, Anni Jürine started her project to investigate Estonian academic writing by rigorously investigating commonly used academic phrases in MA theses.
The justification:
The ability to write clear, genre-appropriate texts with an appropriate style is necessary at all levels of education. Writing support is most needed during university studies, as the creation of written texts required at university places completely new demands on students compared to their previous experience. Research (e.g. Anson 2016) has shown that the ability to write in one genre does not necessarily extend to other genres. Therefore, the ability to write school texts (e.g., a letter) does not help the learner write the texts required for higher education (e.g., an academic essay or a bachelor’s thesis). The Teadustekst Varamu and the Teadustekst website result from our continued effort to provide research-based academic writing resources to our Estonian students. The Bwrite team, Ilona Tragel, and her students will maintain the legacy that Anni Jürine started back in 2018 through our collaborative resources.
